🌼 First Things First — What is Morning Sickness?
If you’re newly pregnant and spending more time hugging the toilet than you’d like — welcome to the not-so-glamorous but very common world of morning sickness. Despite the name, it doesn’t only strike in the morning. For many women, nausea and vomiting can pop up any time of day (or night).
Morning sickness typically starts around week 6, peaks around weeks 8–10, and often eases up by the second trimester. But for some moms-to-be, it sticks around longer. Let’s break down the why, when to worry, and how to deal with it like a boss.
🧪 Why Does Vomiting Happen During Pregnancy?
Your body is doing something incredible, and it’s working overtime. Here’s what could be behind those waves of nausea:
- Hormonal surge – Especially the rise in hCG and estrogen and progesterone
- Heightened sense of smell – Suddenly, your partner’s cologne = 🤢
- Low blood sugar – Skipping meals? That won’t help
- Fatigue & stress – Your body’s tired, and that can make things worse
⚠️ When to Be Concerned
While some nausea is normal, severe and constant vomiting is not. Watch out for:
- Vomiting more than 3–4 times a day
- Inability to keep food or water down
- Rapid weight loss
- Signs of dehydration (dry lips, dark urine, dizziness)
This could be a condition called Hyperemesis Gravidarum, and it needs medical attention. Don’t wait — talk to your gynecologist.
🌿 Tips That Actually Help
Here’s how you can make things a little easier on yourself:
🫖 Ginger tea or lemon water – Nature’s anti-nausea remedy
🍽️ Small, frequent meals – Empty stomachs can trigger nausea
💧 Hydrate in sips, not gulps – Ice chips or electrolyte drinks can help
👃 Avoid strong smells – Goodbye, garlic and perfume
🧘♀️ Rest & de-stress – Prenatal yoga or even deep breathing works wonders
💊 Medical Options (When Home Hacks Aren’t Enough)
If the nausea is too much, don’t suffer in silence. There are pregnancy-safe options we can explore:
- Vitamin B6 & Doxylamine (commonly recommended combo)
- Prescription anti-nausea meds
- IV fluids if dehydration is a concern
As your gynecologist, my goal is to make sure you feel supported and comfortable throughout your pregnancy journey.
👩⚕️ Final Thoughts from the Doc
Vomiting in pregnancy can feel overwhelming, but it’s usually a sign your hormones are doing what they’re supposed to. That said — if you’re feeling drained, struggling to eat or drink, or just not okay with how things are going, you deserve support.
