Making the Most of Early Pregnancy
By Dr. Soma Kumari – Consultant Gynecologist & Obstetrician, Gurgaon
If you’ve recently found out you’re pregnant, congratulations! The first trimester (weeks 1–12) is a time of change — physically and emotionally. While every pregnancy is unique, there are some common experiences and helpful guidelines to follow.
What You Might Experience:
- Mild fatigue, nausea, breast tenderness
- Mood changes and increased urination
- Food cravings or aversions
It’s a good time to begin taking folic acid supplements and maintain a healthy, balanced diet. Staying hydrated and getting enough rest can also support your well-being during this phase.
What to Avoid:
- Smoking, alcohol, and high-caffeine drinks
- Undercooked meat, raw papaya, and unpasteurized dairy
- Heavy lifting or strenuous physical activity without medical advice
- Taking medications without consulting your doctor
Regular prenatal check-ups are important to monitor your health and your baby’s development. If you’re unsure about any symptoms or lifestyle changes, it’s best to speak with your gynecologist.
