White Discharge: What’s Normal & When to Worry
By Dr. Soma Kumari – Consultant Gynecologist & Obstetrician, Gurgaon
Let’s talk about something most women experience — but few openly discuss: white vaginal discharge. Is it normal? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Here’s how to know the difference
What’s Considered Normal?
White or clear discharge is a healthy part of your body’s way of keeping the vagina clean. It often varies during your cycle:
Increases before your period
More stretchy during ovulation
May increase during early pregnancy
More noticeable after physical activity or intercourse
Normal discharge is:
- Clear or milky white
- Mild or no smell
- No itching, burning, or irritation
If this sounds like what you’re experiencing — you’re likely just seeing your body’s natural rhythm in action.
When Should You Be Concerned?
Changes in color, texture, smell, or sensation may indicate something more serious. Here’s when to get checked:
Thick, white, and itchy = Possible yeast infection
Greyish and fishy smell = Bacterial vaginosis
Green/yellow and frothy = Trichomoniasis (STI)
Accompanied by pain, burning, or swelling
All of these are treatable, but early diagnosis makes a big difference. So don’t wait if something feels off.
When to Visit Your Gynecologist
Itching or burning that lasts more than 2–3 days?
Strange odor or color?
Unusual swelling or pain?
These are all signs to book a visit.
“Discharge is normal — but discomfort is not. Don’t wait it out in silence.”
How to Keep Things Fresh (And Balanced!)
Use unscented soap or just water to clean the area
Wear cotton underwear and avoid tight synthetic fabrics
Change pads frequently during your period
Avoid douching or harsh hygiene sprays
Eat a balanced diet and stay hydrated
These small habits go a long way in keeping your vaginal health in check.
Dr. Soma’s Take:
“White discharge is something every woman experiences. Knowing what’s normal (and what’s not) helps you feel more confident in your body — and take action when needed.”
You deserve answers without embarrassment — and care without judgment.
